What is SAIL in Appian? 

SAIL (Self-Assembling Interface Layer) is Appian’s interface design framework used to build interactive, responsive, and reusable user interfaces. Developers use SAIL expressions and built-in components such as text fields, dropdowns, buttons, forms, grids, and charts to create application screens.

SAIL interfaces can dynamically respond to user actions and data changes without requiring traditional front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.

In simple terms: SAIL is the technology in Appian that allows developers to create modern user interfaces using Appian expressions and reusable components.



Basic flow

User Action → SAIL Expression → Data/Logic → Updated Interface

For example:

  1. User opens a form
    Appian evaluates the SAIL expression and displays the interface.
  2. User enters data
    Values are stored in local variables or other configured data structures.
  3. User performs an action
    For example, clicking a button can trigger a!save(), validation, navigation, or other logic.
  4. Appian reevaluates the interface
    The SAIL expression is evaluated again using the updated values.
  5. The screen updates automatically
    Components can appear, disappear, change values, or display validation messages based on the new data.
